 Sin City
1.      The music sets the tone.  The saxophone gives a jazzy, mysterious, big-city feel.
2.      The cinematography is eye catching, memorable, and also tone setting.  The original graphic novels were in black and white, and though “The Customer is Always Right” was completely black and white, Frank Miller often colored the dresses, lips, and eyes of women in many of his shorter stories.
3.    The dialogue in the introduction is completely word for word with the short story, and every frame is visually present as the motion picture plays.  Robert Rodriguez used the graphic novels as the storyboard for the film, and he consulted Frank Miller about which scenes would stay and which ones would be cut.

Sin City is a series of 7 graphic novels written be Frank Miller.  The movie opens with the short story “The Customer is Always Right” from the 6th graphic novel Booze, Broads, and Bullets, a collection of Millers short stories.  After the opening credits, the movie jumps around three of the graphic novels, starting with the first half of  book 4, That Yellow Bastard.  Book 1, The Hard Goodbye, follows and leads into book 3, The Big Fat Kill.  The last half of That Yellow Bastard ends the body of the film, giving the movie a nice round beginning and ending.  To make the ending even more complete, Frank Miller wrote a new short story tying a loose end from The Big Fat Kill including The Salesman from “The Customer is Always Right.”  The three main stories are only connected by a character named Nancy Callahan.

Sin City 2 which is currently in production will include book 2, A Dame to Kill For, several short stories from Booze, Broads, and Bullets that include a character named Blue Eyes, and a new story featuring the character Nancy Callahan.  Sin City 3 which will begin production soon will feature book 7, To Hell and Back.
